The exams went very well and I am very pleased! I took Ester's advice on preparing monologues but when I sat down in front of Rotta, he let me talk about the material in relation to my personal experience, for example, using blogs in the classroom, or wikis...so it was very easy for me. I was glad to see him there today because I feel comfortable around him and wasn't nervous...! Our group has been lucky, we have found ways as a to make it work. 27, 28, 29 Brava Susan!!

5 JULY GOODBYE CHICAGO

...at 4:45 a.m....

We drove in that funky taxi and I said goodbbye to Chicago...everything went well, despite the many stops. I never slept...nothing.. and when I got here in Florence I was a zombie, flaky and

alive but cracking. In Miami we ran to the bar near our gate to watch France beat Portugal...I made the barman change from Wimbleton to the World Cup and I had a beer. All the Europeans came to watch it. As you may know Italy has won the world cup!! Last night we watched the game outside with neighbours and friends, eating pizza and drinking wine -sort of like we all did with your gang in Chicago. Everyone was ecstatic and we won with penalty kicks against France which had beaten us 8 years ago in a similar match for the big cup!!!! We all drove out to the nearest town to honk and celebrate...

now I am at home sleeping till 11 every morning due to jet lag....and gettting my house back in shape.....

what jet lag! Just got into Boca Raton. We were able to spend a nice evening in Paris, caught the train to the Notre Dame and walked around all the little streets near Place San Michel filled with small cheap restaurants- ate for $10. each and had fun. Barely made it back in time for the last shuttle at 1 am to our hotel near the airport!! Things are working out well and this is a good sign. Wish we could have had another day in Paris -I loved it there. Was truly impressed on how well they speak English!! and as much aghast to see that no Frenchmen works in the tourist area shops, restaurants, which are instead filled with Greeks, Asians and who else.... Must get to work on my Masters but first should overcome the jj-jj-jet lag.... At last I found my blog here in Florida...visiting in Boca Raton at the Hilton with my family and some friends! What bliss to return to my old friend in public form and private nature.... http://www.uiowa.edu/%7Eacadtech/phonetics/about.html# ...this was interesting for phonetic freaks and found it in one of my groups. I have so much mail and have been trying to click some of it off while here at the hotel. Nice lounging in the sun here after so much walking in NYC and icy cold and dreary SF. Now we have a car and can be lazy, I had walked off my feet and they were sore no matter which shoe I tried. One more week of this America, seeing my parents. I saw Brenda, Nancy, Taher, Marie and now the local group of cousins here in Boca. Nice to see everyone and it has been good outside of the theft of Saverio`s truck, excavators and crane back home which were hidden in a cemetary: work in progress. Bad news and money that will be lost. Wonder how we will overcome this obstacle? Wrote some poems but they are not with me now...about the dry SF and the non-ness of it, how things have remained still there since 78 when I left for France. My life changed and tumulted. Going upstairs to our room -will probably be going to Miami tomorrow for a change. A PRESTO AND SEE YOU ALL LATER!!

very busy time now with lots of lessons and running around for me and my family. I don't know what's better, this or hanging out. At least I will be earning more money which is always handy! Today I am in Laboratorio Linguistico waiting for my students who hardly showed up, only Lorenzo who just took off. So I have this amazing sensation of freedom and what shall I do with my time? ...now that I have put order in our Moodle and uploaded, corrected and commented on student work...huh? thinking of taking off and looking at the shops. The day ahead is lunch at home, driving Danny to soccer practice and off to Vasari to teach for 3 hours ...Plus if I think I can handle it, I should wisk Tom off to the doctor when I pick him up at 1:30. In those movies the white Americans fought the Indians with rifles and guns. They responded with bows and arrows. There was a real war, but for a little child it was very exciting and I remember the screams and the applause when the “bad” Indian was arrested or died. Brrrrr! At that time there was no politically correct culture! And the bad guys were the Indians and some dirty whites who sold the Indians alcohol. My four year old sister didn’t like those movies and she didn’t want to see them. She wanted to watch sweet romantic movies that were very very boring for a little cowboy! So we used to argue often. Then my mother decided this way: on Sundays we would watch cowboy movies, then afterward a romantic movie. That was the period that I remember with nostalgia.
